Coaches Hall of Fame: Bill Wofford

Hall of Fame – 2014

Wrestling career started as an Arlington Eagle back in the fall of 1974 as a Freshman at 138 lbs. Ended up as 4 time qualifier and a 2 times medalist placing 5th and 3rd. After High School accepted a scholarship to attend UNO and become a Maverick. Competed 4 years and coached another 3 years with Mike Denney. As an athlete was a varsity starter for 4 years and became an All-American placing 4th in 1982. I shared a lot of special memories with the late Ryan Kaufman, Jim Kemsey and RJ Nebe. I have witnessed many All-Americans and National Champions produced from this outstanding program.

I moved to Aurora Nebraska to start my High School coaching career in the fall of 1985. Coach is a passion of mine. Touching lives through wrestling is a great way to make a difference young lives. In those 29 years we started a youth program and tournament that has stayed successful each year. Worked with many young women as cheerleaders, managers and stats girls, Three of them being my daughters Kylie, Katie and Kendal. The Aurora girls have had the opportunity to be the mat maids at the State wrestling tournament 5 times. I have had the chance to coach on the Disney dual team and Maine Exchange, Senior nationals and host the East / West classic. I’ve had the honor of being named GI independent Coach of the year, and FCA coach of the year.

Team accomplishments consist of:
13 Conference titles, 21 top 3 finishes
12 District titles, 22 top 3 finishes
226 State qualifiers with 101 of them becoming State medalist
3 two time undefeated State champions, Caleb Huenefeld, Garret Johns, son Levi Wofford
13 individual State champions and 14 runner ups
State team champs in 1991 followed up with 6 runner up finishes 93,94,02,03,04,05

All of this is not possible without the support of my wife Shelly. She has been a great asset to the program and to me. Not all wrestling coaches have their wives as wrestling advocates. I have been blessed with the best staff in the state. My past and present staff has contributed countless hours benefiting young wrestlers. The past Jim Farrand being one of the best!

It’s been a good fit here in Aurora and I have so many memories that I will cherish a lifetime!

He will be introduced by son Levi Wofford
