Coaches Hall of Fame: Dan Desmond

Hall of Fame – 2001

Dan attended Cambridge High School where he placed second at State as a sophomore and was undefeated and a State Champ his junior and senior year. He then went on to McCook Community College and ended up at Kearney State College, wrestling in both, qualifying for nationals 4x. He became a graduate assistant coach at Kearney and then ventured out into the coaching world for himself, taking a job at Hebron, where he remains today after 21 years. In the words of his high school coach, Fran Jorgensen (John McIntyre/Brett Wattnem Memorial recipient ‘00) “as a coach he has made Hebron a perennial power in wrestling “. And here are the facts of the matter: dual record standing at 165/33. Six District Team Champ titles. State Top Ten Teams (are you ready?) 11 times. Taking the team title in Class D in 1998 and again in 1999 with the exception that Hebron was now in Class C. A rare moment, supportive of his good coaching abilities. Then we have every coaches dream: coaching your son to his fourth State Champ Crown . Dirk picked up his fourth Gold Medal in 1999 becoming only the fifth athlete to do so in 55 years of Nebraska wrestling. Dan has expanded his interest in wrestling by serving as NSWCA President, board member numerous times, All Star Classic Co – Meet Director, Huskerland Wrestling board member, All Star Classic Coach, USA Wrestling, USA Junior National Freestyle coach 4 yrs., AAU, Nebraska AAU Co-past President, ,and AAU Folkstyle/ Freestyle Coach. He has been selected NSWCA Coach of the Year 4x and NCA Coach of the Year. He also coached the State Champion Boys Cross Country Team Class D – 2000. Counting his biggest thrill his and Terri’s two children – Jennifer and Dirk, Dan is introduced by his friend and fellow coach, Tim Classen , Hall ‘95.
