Coaches Hall of Fame: Dave Boyd

COACH
Hall of Fame – 2001
Norfolk

If it weren’t for coaches like Dave Boyd, wrestling in Nebraska would have had a much slower start. Starting out his career at Niobrara County High School in Lusk, Wyoming in the ‘60s where he was a 4 yr. career man in football, wrestling, track and Legion baseball he came to Chadron State College, lucky for Nebraska, where he was a varsity wrestler 4 yrs at 118/126 lbs. And best news of all – he stayed in Nebraska!! He coached at Bridgeport for 2 years and then came to Norfolk in 1975 where he has racked up 26 years of experience and still counting. Dave can proudly claim a dual meet record of 170-46-2 with 78 invitational, conference and district championships or runner-up titles. He has had 68 Nebraska State High School Wrestling Tournament Medalists . His teams have been rated in the Top Five Dual Teams four times by the NSWCA in their wrestling ratings: 1st in ‘88 and ‘95 and 2nd in ‘87 and ‘90. He has also coached 4 Nebraska Freestyle Teams to Europe and Asia: Iran in ‘78, and Germany in ‘80, ‘81, and ‘83. He is the founder and director of the Norfolk Youth Wrestling Club as well as the Northeast Nebraska Wrestling Clinic/Camp which “teams like Albion, Creighton, Pierce, David City, and Winside” use as “a majority of their summer training” according to Tim Neumann Hall ‘95. He has organized and hosted the UNL/Clemson University Dual in ‘91, the UNL/University of Oklahoma Dual in ‘94, and organized and managed the Mat Assistants for the Nebraska State High School Wrestling Tournament in ‘81,’87,’96. He has also made time to be the official scorer at the Big 12 Championships, Great Plains Open, and UNL dual meets. And still promoting wrestling, he speaks at the Norfolk Boosters Club, Noon Athletic Club, and various service organizations. But probably the supreme compliment which comes from Sandy Connors, KNEN News Director and a similar comment from Bill Seifert KNEN Sports Director is Dave’s “committment to wrestling and to his students/athletes” Sandy’s comment: “there was always one high school coach who was always ready to interview, to talk up his kids and thank the community for its support – Dave Boyd” Bill adds to that: “As a sports reporter I have always been impressed with Dave’s effort to keep the media informed on the progress of his wrestlers while they were in his program and when they moved on to the next level”. He is introduced by his friend, Tim Neumann,Hall ‘95
