Coaches Hall of Fame: Ferde Goings

Hall of Fame – 1992

Getting a taste for the sport while in high school at Holdrege, this gentleman has notched 23 years of coaching, belying his youthful appearance. He was assistant for one year and took the reins as head coach in 1970, a position he still holds at Plattsmouth. His career record stands at 141-61-7 and has coached seven State Champions. His teams have not had a losing season since 1973 and one of those Blue Devil teams brought home the coveted first place trophy from the State Tournament in 1990.

Ferde has given of his time as an NSWCA board member for three years, serving as president in 1979-80. His popularity with wrestling coaches in the state garnered him the Class B “Coach of the Year” in 1990 from the NSWCA.

His cool, calm approach to this exacting sport was evidenced approximately 15 years ago at the Boys Town Tournament when he plucked an 18 month old coach’s daughter from the center of the mat as the referee was awarding takedown points to the Plattsmouth wrestler. (Some say the 18 month old’s last name was Barry!!!!)
Ferde’s biggest thrills include the 1990 state championship and being able to coach his two sons.
