Coaches Hall of Fame: Mike Mahar

Hall of Fame – 1992

Mike began and learned about wrestling while coaching under Bob Smith of Wray, Colorado. With a few years experience under his belt he came to Shelton in 1968 coaching the Bulldogs until 1976. He was also in the program in Garden County at Oshkosh from 1978-1989 but was most successful while at Shelton. He compiled 37 wins and 13 losses during his stint as a coach. His teams were conference and district champs three times and district runners-up once.

Never quite capturing the number one spot his boys were in the number two spotlight at state in ’72 and again in ’76 and finished in the top ten on six occasions. Coach Mahar founded the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter in Shelton and friends say his fondest memory would have been of the Shelton/Harrisburg team race at state in 1972 where he was coaching against Hall of Fame member Ron Klemke.
