Coaches Hall of Fame: Mike Simpson

Hall of Fame – 1987
Republican Valley

Beginning his coaching career in Maywood, Nebraska, Mike compiled a 12-5 meet record in just two years. Moving to Republican Valley High School at Indianola in 1976 he began a coaching career that lasted 10 years. Spotlighting his illustrious career in Republican Valley was a Class C record of 73 consecutive dual wins. Mike notched a career record there of 91-3. This versatile coach also volunteered to head up the massive task of keeping wrestling records for the entire state at the request of the NSWCA. He began in 1980, and we know that his time and efforts were well-rewarded in the fact that sportswriters thoughout the state now have an accurate file at their fingertips about wrestling in Nebraska. Mike’s efforts culminated in publication two years ago in the NSAA official publication: Wrestling, State Wrestling Tournament 1986. This was a “first” in Nebraska. Named the NSWCA 1986 Class C Coach of the Year, Simpson claims as his biggest thrill, having all seven of his state qualifiers win medals in the 1983 state tournament and capturing the team title.
