Coaches Hall of Fame: Robert Arehart

Hall of Fame – 2013

The late Robert Arehart (Bob) began his wrestling career in Bertrand, Nebraska where he won a state championship in class C at 180 pounds in 1968.He then went on to wrestle and play football for Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota.

He began his coaching career in Willow Lake, South Dakota where he coached for two years. He continued his coach career at Friend Public School for the next 35 years until he retired. While at Friend he had 144 qualifiers, 53 medalists, 10 finalists, 6 state champions and 5 top ten finishes at the Nebraska state tournament.

He was an original member of the NSWCA and signed the charter agreement. In 2010, he was the award winner of the John McIntyre/Brett Watnem Award.

He enjoyed the camaraderie with the coaches, wrestlers and families that he would see on a weekly basis during the wrestling season. He also enjoyed ‘running into’ old wrestlers where they would relive the glory days.

Bob’s son, Christopher Arehart, is accepting the award on behalf of the Arehart family. He is being introduced by Bob’s longtime assistant and friend Kevin Steffensen.
