Coaches Hall of Fame: Vern Ekfelt

COACH
Hall of Fame – 1982
Omaha

Coach Ekfelt wrestled for four years at the University of Iowa without having had the benefit of a high school program. He entered the coaching ranks at Omaha Central during the years of 1942 to 1946 and managed to win the state title three of those four years. In 1946 Ekfelt accepted an assistant principalship, athletic director’s position and head wrestling at Omaha North. During his 18 year tenure at North he managed one state team title and tallied 51 individual state champions. He instituted the then North High Tournament and groomed it into one of the premier prep meets in the state. That tournament now bears his name in honor of his years of dedicated service.

Mr. Ekfelt was also active as a wrestling official for some 20 years besides his coaching duties. He has had a most positive influence on the sport of wrestling and has helped it grow both in quality and numbers.
