Dr. Benning was a member of the 1969 US. Olympic Wrestling Committee and recieved the NAIA Award of Merit and the Sports Illustrated Award of Merit. He was appointed the first black head coach of a predominantly white university in the United States; this being Omaha University. He brought the first collegiate national championship to the state of Nebraska with his 1970 team at OU. He was the Lincoln Journal-Star College Coach of the Year as well as the Omaha World-Herald College Coach of the Year. He was the NAIA Coach of the Year and is a member of the UNO Wrestling Hall of Fame.
