Hall of Fame – 2001
This is The Man! Bernie has been there and done that, and not that usual “stay at one or two weights” stuff but he has collected titles at 154 lbs, 165 lbs, 190 lbs, 191 lbs, 220 lbs, and HWT. He began his wrestling career at Archbishop Ryan High School in 1965, but it was 1966 when the titles began to roll in. He took 1st place in the Tech High Invitational and the South High Invitational at 154 lbs. He added to that 2nd in the Metro Conference, 2nd at the North High Invitational, 3rd at Districts, and 3rd at State. Moving up to 165 lbs the next year, Bernie was 3rd in the Metro Conference and second at Districts. At HWT that same year he was 2nd at the North High Invitational. Staying at HWT his senior year, he was 1st at the Millard Invitational, 3rd at the Metro Conference, and moved into the Champion’s circle at Districts and State. His high school record stands at 77-17-2. Attending College at UNO he kept the honors coming in: 2nd in the CSU Invitational ’68, 3rd at RMAC Conference, 2nd at UNO Invitational, University of Iowa Invitational Champion, (‘69) 2nd RMAC Conference, NAIA National Champ, 2nd AAU National Freestyle Open , UNO Invitational Champion, (‘70) and 2nd NAIA Nationals (‘71). He closed his college career at 59-11 with his AAU experience at 3-1. Counting as his best memory of this wrestling world, Bernie has enjoyed watching his 3 sons wrestle along with winning the 1970 NAIA National Team Championship and his individual win of the Gold at 190 lbs with all of his wins coming by fall. He is introduced by his college coach, Dr. Don Benning, Hall 1985.
