Competitors Hall of Fame: Gary Baldwin

COMPETITOR
Hall of Fame – 1990
Grand Island

Gary was a standout wrestler for Grand Island High School in the early 70’s but his career began in 1969 at Walnut Junior High and continued through college at UNO. Not one for keeping detailed records of his accomplishments we were able to get many positive comments from his former coach, Hall of Fame member, Rod Shada. In addition to records set by Gary and still standing at Grand Island High School, Coach Shada remembers Gary as being the “driving force behind the State Champion Team of 1973”. He recalls that Gary “always did what was best for the team.”

Gary was a two-time State Champ who was undefeated his junior and senior seasons posting 47 consecutive wins. His career record in high school stands at 67-5-1 with the losses and tie coming in his sophomore year. This great competitor was Grand Island’s Most Valuable Gymnast three years running and UNO’s Most Valuable Scholastic Athlete in All Sports in 1979 taking home the All-American title in the same year.

Meeting unbeaten Roye Oliver, 1988 Hall of Fame member, Gary reigned victorious. Shada recalls Oliver’s comments that he “just couldn’t turn him like he could other opponents” leading Shada to the conclusion that Gary’s gymnastic abilities and his intense sense of competition carried through for the win.
