Hall of Fame – 1986
Being reputed as the “most outstanding wrestler” in Cozad Hish School history in the Tri-City Tribune in 1973 and “pre-match meals” rank high in Jim’s memeories of wrestling. Capturing the state crown three times form 1965-67 at 138, 154, and 165 helped earn Jim’s spot in the NSWCA Hall of Fame. His brilliant career in high school produced a record of 75-3-1, being undefeated his senior year with a 20-0 mark. At state that year he won every bout by a pin including the match against Rich Moline of Holdrege who had ruined Haug’s perfect season the year previous. Jim went on to wrestle at UNL where he finished fourth in the Big 8 as a junior and third as a senior. He was runner-up in the Great Plains Tournament at 177, champion at the Colorado State Invitational, third at the UNO Invite and on the mid-season All-American List of Amateur Wrestling News. In his senior season he posted a 25-5 record with a perfect dual season.
