Competitors Hall of Fame: Mark Weston

Hall of Fame – 1992

Another standout from Kearney, Mark attended Kearney Senior High in 1980-81 where he notched a career mark of 51-1 and holds the career record with Keven Anderson for most wins at 52. He was the 98 lb. State Champ in 1980 and took second in 1981 but added the High School All-American title to his collection that year.

Mark’s college credentials at the University of Nebraska-Omaha are impeccable. During his tenure from 1981-1986 he earned 111 victories which earned him more than a few laurels. NCAA II National Runner-up in ’86 heads the list which includes All-American honors in both ’85 and ’86, the Most Falls Trophy in the ’85 nationals, NCC Conference titles in ’85 and again in ’86. He was UNO’s “Outstanding Wrestler” in ’83-’84. He was team co-captain in 1986 and was UN’L Open “Outstanding Wrestler” in the same year. He was ranked #8 in Wrestling USA at 118 lbs. in 1986 as well.

Fondest memories include the high school state title win and winning the UN-L Open against Matt Elgin of Iowa which earned him Outstanding Wrestler status for that tournament and the “STUD” label from Lou Banak and Dan Gable upon congratulations. Mark seems to think all this was a pretty good birthday present!

Mark is so much more than just a great wrestler. He found time to accumulate a grade point average which earned him Magna Cum Laude status upon graduation with a BA in Chemistry in 1986. He went on to earn a degree as a Medical Doctor from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1990 “with distinction.” All this and he can wrestle too!!!
