Competitors Hall of Fame: Steve Ravenscroft

Hall of Fame – 1982

“Competitor” may be the most suitable title this three time state champion from Valentine could wear. With no junior high wrestling background Ravenscroft dropped six matches his first year on the mat but tearfully promised coach Mo Teherani “I’ll do better next year.” True to his promise Steve soared to three consecutive state titles giving up only seven match points in the totality of the three tournaments. For his efforts Ravenscroft earned All-American status.

Ravenscroft was one of the few Nebraska wrestlers until recent times to tempt big time wrestling schools out of the fertile triangle of Iowa, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma wrestling as he drew recruiting pressure from Okahoma, Oklahoma State and Iowa State but decided to become a Cornhusker. Earning a varsity uniform two years while at Nebraska he qualified for the nationals twice and earned a fourth place finish in the Big 8 Conference.

Ravenscroft is remembered to this day as the epitome of the All-American athlete. His earthy goodness and human kindness complimented his athletic prowess.
