Attending the Omaha Home for Boys from ’59-’63, Wendell spent his high school years at Omaha Benson from ’63-’66. During that time he became the first wrestler in the 19 year history of the North High Invitational to win two trophies – one for the Most Falls and one for the Outstanding Wrestler. And then came more “firsts”. He was the first wrestler from Benson High School to win the State Wrestling Champ Crown (1965), taking it again in 1966. He was also the first wrestler from Benson to have an undefeated season (’65) and repeating that in 1966. He was chosen World Herald Star of the Week in ’66 as well as being on the National Interscholastic Honor Roll that same year. He went on to college at Omaha University (UNO) fro’66-’69 where he took the NAIA National Champion Title in ’68 at 160 lbs.,taking 3rd in ’69 at 160 lbs. He was named AmateurWrestling News Sophomore of the Year at 160 lbs. and was inducted into the UNO Hall of Fame in 2000.He won 67 matches in high school, losing two, while in college his losses numbered 4. In addition to his outstanding records in the sport ofwrestling, he was named Driver of the Year 2000 for Brown Transfer, his current employer. Still a fan of wrestling he counts as his biggest thrill taking the NAIA National Champ title in Alamosa, Colorado. Wendell is being introduced by his college coach, Dr. Donald Benning, Hall 1985.
