Contributors Hall of Fame: Al Thrower

Hall of Fame – 2004

Getting involved with wrestling in ’75 because his sons came home with a newsletter about youth wrestling in Bellevue, Al immediately volunteered to be an ass’t coach so he could learn something about it. He soon became “hooked”, taking kids to camps every year and organizing a more experienced program within the Bellevue Jr. Sports Assoc for the more aggressive kids to have more challenging opportunities. He also headed the Metro Youth Wrestling in Omaha/Council Bluffs and along the way became involved with Tim Neumann (Hall “95)and wrestling at UNL. He chartered a non-profit club, transported UNL wrestlers everywhere, recruited volunteers for the Great Plains Open, National Duals, and the Nebraska Jr. State Open. He has been a professional volunteer for the last 29 years. In addition Al has been chosen the Bellevue Leader 1996 Person of the Year, received the NE Sportscasters Community Award, UNL Wrestling Booster and Wrestling Award. In ’04 he was given the Community Service Award, has the Jewel of Bellevue Award, and is an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy. His biggest thril has been to be able to be a part of his grandsons, Jason and Jared Pickett’s wrestling careers for the last 4 yrs. and proudly sharing their many achievements. At the “young” age of 80 he still wishes he could work the State Meet which he did for many years but he has not given up promoting his true love: WRESTLING! He is introduced by his friend and the coach of his grandsons, Gaylen Kamrath (Hall ’99).
