Contributors Hall of Fame: Carolyn Hoyt

Hall of Fame – 1997

What is that old saying, “Behind every good wrestling program, there is a woman . . . . . . . . . encouraging, supporting, organizing, assisting . . . . .” Well, something like that, right? Meet Carolyn Hoyt. She has been involved in Nebraska wrestling since the 1950’s when she was a wrestling cheerleader for three years at the University of Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture at Curtis. She has helped her husband, Gary, (Hall,’87) with local youth wrestling programs in Hyannis and Mullen prior to the organization of the Nebraska Wrestling Federation (a.k.a. Nebraska Kids Wrestling). She served as secretary-treasurer of that group from 1975 as well as membership chairman. She is a member of USA Wrestling as a pairings official and as a coach. Serving on the USA Pairings Officials National Board of Directors from 1992-1996, she has been head pairings director at tournaments for numerous local, state, Northern Plains Regionals, Junior and Cadet Nationals, US Mens Open and Women’s World Trials. She was assigned head pairings director at the Preliminary Olympic Greco Trials in ’92 & ’96. She is currently Head Pairing Director and member of the Executive Board for USA NE Wrestling. She is the only Nebraska official to be upgraded to a ‘1 E’ officals’ rating from USA Wrestling. In addition she was chosen Person of the Year – 1980, Pairing Official of the Year – 1984, Woman of the Year – 1988, and received the Pioneer Award in 1993. In his nomination of Carolyn, Dan Brost of Mullen, (Hall, ’94) states: “Carolyn is one of those ‘behind the scenes’ people that make a program work. She has always housed wrestlers from visiting teams, hauls kids and cheerleaders to meets, makes sure that the pairings are done correctly for the US Kids meets in the area and anything else that is asked of her.” Counting as her biggest thrill has been having the opportunity to see her sons Phil, Todd, and Kyle win at State and to have watched Kyle sing the National Anthem at the 1995 State Tournament finals, she is introduced by her friends Dale Bonge (Hall,96), Albion and Charlie Krantz of Alliance.
