Contributors Hall of Fame: Don Koenig

Hall of Fame – 1994

A charter member of the NSWCA in l977. Coach Koenig has been with this sport for 28 years. He started the program in Wakefield , NE in l966, then moved to Wayne in l967 where he remains today but from the view of the retiree’s chair! He was a state qualifier in high school at Postville, IA which may have been the incentive to devote a large part of his life to this fascinating sport. Not limiting his expertise in this sport to the mat, Don has also instructed Wrestling Theory and Fundamentals at the college level, been an advisor on motion picture scripts involving wrestling, and announced dual meets on cable television. Not willing to give it up entirely, he has been a certified high school wrestling referee for 9 years. Six of his former wrestlers are now head or assistant wrestling coaches. He hold s the honor of NCA assistant Coach of the Year and was given a plaque for 25 years of coaching by the NCA. Hehas collected awards for service from the Wayne Athletic Boosters, the High School “W” Club and the Wayne Wrestling Club. He has also been the National Chairman of Elementary Division for Physical Education and was given the Govrnor’s Award for an outstanding program in physical education. His biggest thrill came in l984 at the State Wrestling Tournament. “This was the first year Wayne High School had a State Champion. I was his coach and his father.” Don is introduced by his friend and coach, Ron Carnes, Wayne.
