Contributors Hall of Fame: Gary Schlesinger

Hall of Fame – 2009

Gary has been coaching youth wrestling for over 30 years. During that time he has collected some great memories. He was a member of Columbus High’s first wrestling team that was coached by Ron Callan. While in Columbus he began an extension to the Columbus YMCA’s program in the 1970’s from a two week program to a six month program. Moving on to Duncan he started the Duncan Wrestling Club in 1991 and is still coaching with the help of Dale Runquist. Duncan wrestler has won four Huskerland State Titles with two runners-up and a third place since starting up. Twelve of his wrestlers have gone on to become High School State Champs and 42 of his wrestlers became medal winners. Gary was inducted into the Huskerland Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2002 and he received the Al Thrower Memorial Sportsmanship Award in 2009 He considers his biggest thrill watching every kid he has coached go on and win a medal or become a High School State Champ. In addition it was a thrill to see his son, Corey, become a 2x Class A State Champ and his son, Scott, place sixth at State.
