Hall of Fame – 2014
Shannon Gocke of York has spent the bulk of his wrestling life coaching. He started wrestling in 6th grade and finished as runner-up at the State meet on the State Championship team coached by the legendary Dave Ciccone in 1988.
He began his coaching career at Lincoln Northeast High School. He volunteered for Coach Dwain Borchers while student teaching. The following year he was hired as an assistant coach. He also coached the Northeast Olympic Club Youth and Freestyle teams.
Shannon later was hired as the Head Coach at Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca. While at Syracuse he helped coach the Neekos Freestyle Wrestling club in Lincoln with coach Ted Glover.
One year later Shannon was given a unique opportunity to move back to York and work under his coach, Dave Ciccone before the two switched roles a few years later. Shannon acted as the Head Coach for another 11 years, with 4 other assistants along the way. Shannon was named District Coach of the Year in 2006.
After taking a break from Head Coaching in 2010, Shannon has continued to help coach and organize the York Kids Wrestling program while volunteer coaching with the middle school and high school programs. He also helps run tournaments, seeding meetings and set up. He is partially responsible for York securing the District Tournament every even year since 2000.
York Summer Wrestling League was his answer to offseason participation. Once in York he found it difficult to get his wrestlers into freestyle opportunities, so after a few years decided that he would create the league to give his men the opportunity for off-season wrestling close to home. Over 15 years it has grown through 5 buildings and from 50 wrestlers in the first year to well over 200 the last few years.
Shannon is blessed to have had the opportunity to work with so many great people in wrestling. He feels fortunate to have been able to watch and help so many wrestlers strive to reach their goals in and out of sport and become men.
Shannon is currently teaching at York High School and his wife Tina, teaches at St. Joseph’s School. They have two children, Bailey a freshman and Harrison a 7th grader.
Tim Moser, a 2003 York High grad, is one of Shannon’s favorite wrestlers and will be introducing him.
