York

I was born and raised in Seward, Nebraska, graduating from Seward High School in 1972.  I participated in football, wrestling and track while in high school and began wrestling in 4th grade in little league.  After high school I worked for Goodyear Tire & Rubber in Lincoln.  I married my wife Deb in 1975 and moved to York where I worked for Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph and became involved in working with the youth by coaching Little League football.  In 1980 I became involved in the York Youth Wrestling Program and worked with youth in that capacity for 30 years.   I have been a volunteer firefight in York for 34 years having held the offices of President, Chief  and Captain.  I served on the scholarship committee for the Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Association.  In 1999 I received an Aksarben  Firemanship Award  for the State Volunteer Firefighters Association.    I have been Head Usher and an Elder for Faith Lutheran Church.

I received a community service award in 1999 from the York Chamber of Commerce, I was Yorkfest King in 2002.  I have been a timer and scorer at the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament for 22 years.

My volunteer wrestling coaching career at York High School began in 1991 when then Coach Dave Ciccone called and asked me if I could work out with one of the heavyweights on the team who didn’t have a workout partner.  I have been working as a volunteer assistant coach each year since.  I have worked with the summer wrestling program for 11 years and have organized several summer wrestling camps with the University of Nebraska and Oklahoma State wrestlers.

In 1998 I was chairman of a fundraising effort for a new gym floor and in 2008 I was chairman for fundraising to build a multi-use facility for our student athletes.    The facility included a new weight room, wrestling room and a 2 court indoor tennis facility to be used for many sports.

My family is my wife Deb, son Travis who lives and goes to school in Lincoln, son Matt and his wife Stacie of Ankeny, Iowa and grandson Hunter and my daughter Alissa who lives in Hays, Kansas.

My many years of working with kids and sports, especially wrestling, have been very rewarding.  I thank York High and Middle School administration for allowing me to do this and I thank all of you for the award.

Wes will be introduced by former York wrestler and Coach Shannon Gocke
